We should not rely on human “authorities” as our guide on marriage and family because they are not godly instructions. The ultimate source of guidance should be the Bible, the inspired Word of God. If the Scripture is profitable for teaching and providing instructions to equip us to be complete in all good works, then we should use the Scriptures to guide us in our marriage.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 - All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Moreover, it was God who instituted marriage and family from the beginning of time and so He knows the best way to have a good marriage and a happy family.
Genesis 2:18 - And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.”
Genesis 2:23-24 - And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
There are many books written by man on marriage and family, but the Bible is the best book ever written on this subject. The wisdom of God in the Bible exceeds the wisdom of man, and therefore we should choose it as our guide on marriage and family.
Isaiah 55:8-9 – “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.
Those who obey the words of God will find success in what they do, that would surely include success in one’s marriage and family.
Joshua 1:8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
We do not need to be clueless about the responsibilities, duties, and proper behaviour that God expects us to have in our marriages and families because God has provided instructions in the Bible. The Bible is the Word of God, and God is never wrong. If you want a good marriage and a good home, you must follow the teachings of the Bible.
2 Peter 1:3 - As His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue.
