The Authority In Marriage And Family

By bro Lee Tian Seng

Why are we witnessing so much trouble in marriage and family? The rate of divorce is high in many countries and there are conflicts and violence in many families. Couples fight with each other and parents physically abuse their children. These are the type of things that we do not expect, but are happening behind closed doors. Adultery invades homes and destroys the trust between husband and wife. Parents neglect to discipline their children when they are young, and when they grow up they rebel against them. The problems we see today is the result of people following human “authorities” as their guide in marriage and family.

Some would follow worldly “experts” like psychiatrists, sex educators and civil government, etc. While they may not always be wrong in giving advice, it is true that worldly wisdom that is contradictory to the words of God does not lead to peace and harmony due to sin.

1 Corinthians 1:19-20 – For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.” Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

Proverbs 14:12 – There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.

Some would follow the practices of society, what they learn from the community, neighbours and friends. These well-meaning people are a source of guidance when needed, but their wisdom is not always aligned with the teachings of God.

Romans 12:2 – And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Matthew 7:13-14 - “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

Still, some would follow the practices of their parents. Not that our parents are always wrong in instructing us about marriage and family, but some may not teach the godly way. If that is true, we should not continue to follow them but follow God.

Matthew 10:37 - He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.

Acts 5:29 - But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men.

Finally, some would seek to follow their personal desires or the desires of family members which are not godly. We should surrender our will to God and follow His way when it comes to having better marriages and families.

Matthew 16:24-25 - Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.
